ARCHIVED - Temperatures plummet by 10 degrees: Spain weather forecast September 12-15
Storm Danielle arrives in Spain this week with gusts of up to 70kph and abundant rain
Spain may have avoided a hurricane after Danielle was downgraded to a storm but the weather is going to change dramatically this week, bringing the first real taste of autumn to the country. While the thermometers didn’t dip below the mid-30s in most of Spain over the weekend, the mercury is set to take a major nosedive in the coming days, dropping as much as 10ºC along the western coast.
From Monday September 12, Storm Danielle will sweep across Spain from west to east, with the worst of the rainfall expected in Galicia, Extremadura and the western extremities of Andalucia and Castilla y León.
It’s going to be a cloudy day overall with no fewer than 12 regions on alert for storms, including the Valencian Community. Although the temperatures will begin to fall, the Balearic Islands and Aragón can expect another scorcher, and there’s an uncomfortable night ahead with most areas remaining in and around the mid-20s.
By Tuesday September 13 the rainfall will spread to the rest of the country, especially intense in central Spain in the morning and the northeast in the afternoon. The Canary and Balearic Islands won’t be spared either, although the showers aren’t expected to be as heavy. Gusts of up to 70 kilometres per hour are forecast in the north. It will be overcast along the Mediterranean coast, where the rain is predicted to be weakest.
Daytime temperatures will drop even further with little change at night.
The forecasts indicate that the storm will weaken from Wednesday September 14, although it will take longer to clear in the north. A risk of occasionally heavy rain and storms will persist throughout Wednesday and Thursday September 15 in the western half of Spain.
The rains due to sweep Spain from Monday will bring some welcome relief to the drought situation, with more than 100 litres per square metre predicted in western Galicia, Extremadura and the Catalan Pyrenees. In addition, around half this amount is forecast in Catalonia, Navarra, Aragón, Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia.
