ARCHIVED - Temperatures soar before the rains finally hit: Spain weather forecast Apr 20-23
The mercury will rise and dip throughout the weekend with showers expected across Spain

After a staggering drought that has endangered crops and threatened water restrictions across the country, the prolonged dry period will come to an end this weekend, but not before the thermometers once again jump up to midsummer temperatures.
The rainfall between Friday and Sunday will be “neither abundant nor persistent”, according to Aemet spokesperson Ruben del Campo, but it will dampen many parched areas of Spain, such as Madrid, which hasn’t seen a drop of rain since March 8.
As the days pass, a very warm air mass will be replaced by an Atlantic front, resulting in a “notable but temporary drop in temperatures” but for the next couple of days at least, the mercury will easily hit the mid 30s in the south of Spain.
After a pretty chilly few days, the temperatures will begin to rise on Thursday April 20, particularly in the east, exceeding 25ºC in a large part of the country. On the whole, the day will be between 5 and 10 degrees warmer than normal for April, with areas of the Valencian Community and the Guadalquivir Valley expected to top 30ºC.
The so-called onion days will continue, with a noticeable drop in temperature on Thursday night.
The Atlantic front will arrive in Spain on Friday April 21, giving rise to cloudy skies and plenty of showers in Galicia and Asturias. The rest of the country will become progressively more overcast from midday, with a chance of showers and stormy intervals.
Friday will be an unusual day temperature-wise: the mercury will continue to climb along the southeastern coast but it will make a dramatic drop in the northern part of the Mediterranean and in the entire western half of the country.
The evening will be considerably warmer in the southeast and in the Balearic Islands.
As we move in to Saturday April 22, the front will traverse the country, bringing rain and showers to most of Spain, although “it will not be very abundant rainfall.” The precipitation is unlikely to alleviate the drought, since hardly 10 litres per square metre is expected to fall, except in parts of Galicia.
The rain will be accompanied by another fall in temperature, the mercury dropping by 6 or 8 degrees in the north and east of Spain compared to the previous day. The weather on Saturday, therefore, will be more typical of mid-April, with maximums of 25ºC predicted for the Guadalquivir.
Unstable conditions and cloudy skies will continue into Sunday April 23 in the extreme north of the country and in the Balearic Islands, although things should begin to brighten up towards the afternoon. Rain is not expected in southern Spain but it will be rather overcast all day.
Night-time temperatures will drop across the board although the afternoon should be a couple of degrees warmer than Saturday.
Aemet meteorologist del Campo has pointed out that during the first 16 days of April, barely 5 litres per square metre of rain have fallen in Spain as a whole, an “extraordinarily low” amount that represents just 15% of the normal level for this time of year.
If the forecast for the rest of the month pans out as expected, Spain is looking at the driest April since records began in 1961.
