Tenerife police find another missing Brit while searching for Jay Slater
The Lancashire teen disappeared in the forbidding Spanish countryside more than a week ago
In an incredible turn of events, Tenerife police scouring the foreboding countryside where 19-year-old Jay Slater disappeared last week have found another missing Brit. Unbelievably, a search crew happened upon a Scottish hiker who had lost his way in the enormous Rural de Teno National Park.
The 51-year-old hiker had to be pulled out of a ravine by police on Friday June 21, close to the northern Tenerife spot where Jay’s phone last pinged. The Scot had been hiking a very difficult route that’s not generally recommended for walking, and was found exhausted and disorientated.
Meanwhile, the frantic search continues for missing Jay, an apprentice bricklayer from Lancashire who had attended a three-day rave on the island.
According to investigators, Jay spent the night following the party with two other Brits in an AirBnb. The next morning, after learning he would be in for a long wait for the next bus, the young holidaymaker decided to set off on foot to his hotel, where pal Lucy was waiting for him.
But it would seem that Jay headed for the forbidding mountains instead, in the opposite direction to his accommodation. Somewhere along the way, he made a frantic call to Lucy, telling her he was lost and that his battery was about to go dead.
His last known location was near the Masca ravine, a 2,000-foot “badlands” area.
The search for Jay has involved drones, sniffer dogs and helicopters, and police have expanded their efforts to include forest trails and tracks north of the gorge in Teno Rural Park. As the search enters its second week, the fate of Jay Slater remains unknown.
In an added twist, CCTV footage has emerged that could show Jay alive and well. The grainy image was captured near a church in Santiago del Teide on Monday June 17 at 6pm. This is only a few kilometres from where he went missing.
However, while Jay’s parents are clinging to the hope that this is their son, Spanish police haven’t confirmed that the CCTV is being treated as an official sighting.
