ARCHIVED - Terminal patients in Murcia hospitals will be able to say goodbye to their pets
People hospitalised in Cartagena with serious illnesses will also be able to receive visits from their furry friends
In a pioneering move to ensure the utmost comfort for patients, the Cartagena University Hospital complex, which comprises the Santa Lucía and Rosell hospitals, has announced that people who are seriously ill or terminal can request to have their pet visit them during their stay.
The Santa Lucía hospital has already introduced the initiative, with one patient with limited mobility receiving a visit from his beloved dog in his room. For patients who can move around more freely, a special area on the terrace floor has been dedicated to meeting between owners and their pets.
The aim of the initiative, according to the Cartagena health area, is to make hospital stays as comfortable as possible for those who are seriously ill and to offer terminal patients a chance to say goodbye to their animals.
The Palliative Care Unit has to take a slightly more cautious approach to the project given the risk to patients, and will decide on a case-by-case basis if the visit is feasible. Along with the usual Covid-19 precautions, the family of the patient will provide the palliative care staff with a certificate of the pet's health status and vaccination record signed by a veterinarian and the animal must be properly groomed.
