The 10 new words in Spanish that you should learn in 2023
The latest online version of the Dictionary of the Spanish language has one or two surprising additions

The Dictionary of the Spanish language (DLE) gets updated each year with new additions and changes, and it’s definitely worth a peek this year if you want to know your Spanish lingo.
There are a staggering 3,152 new words, revisions and additions to the dictionary for the 2023 edition, mainly focusing on novelties from the world of technology, as well as the very topical age and gender issues, and a fair few curveballs too.
Here are the top 10 new Spanish words we think you should know:
- Panetón: Not exactly a new addition but a new version filed under the well-known Panetone, described in the Dictionary as a “Christmas cake of Italian origin.”
- Micromachismo: This doesn’t need much translating, and refers to “the form of machismo that manifests itself in small acts or expressions, usually unconscious.”
- Mamitis: A brand new word that refers to the excessive attachment of a child to its mother. Interestingly, the corresponding papitis hasn’t been included, not because the writers of the Dictionary don’t believe it’s a real phenomenon, they explained, but simply “because it has not been documented.”
- Edadismo: Now a part of everyday language, this new addition translates into ageism, the discrimination of people based on their advanced years.
- Videojugador: For the first time ever, the Spanish translation of the word gamer has been included to refer to people who play video games on a regular basis.
- Puntocom: Dotcom in English, an adjective for companies that carry out their activity on the Internet.
- Conspiranoia: A popular one in these days of pandemic, this word is the same in Spanish and English and means a tendency to interpret events by some conspiracy or other.
- Isquiotibial: It seems incredible that this wasn’t in the Dictionary before, but the word simply means hamstring, the muscles located on the back of the thigh and which give football players so many problems.
- Micromecenazgo: Another popular term this year and a brand new addition, this translates to the word crowdfunding, described as "financing a project by involving a large number of people contributing small amounts of money."
- Portuñol: Last but not least is an interesting little addition that combines Portuguese with español, which the creators of the Dictionary say is comparable to the already commonly used term Spanglish.
