ARCHIVED - The arrival of a DANA stormfront could see temperatures plummet across Spain
Temperatures could drop by as much as 10ºC in certain parts of Spain over the weekend
The Isolated Depression at High Levels (DANA) storm that is brewing in North Africa and causing an unseasonable heatwave all across Spain this week could actually make a dramatic U-turn and cause temperatures to plummet at the weekend, according to Aemet.
In its current position, to the west of the Spanish Peninsula, the weather front is driving “these winds from the south, which bring very warn air loaded with haze,” and meteorologists expect the warm spell, which has raised the mercury as high as 42ºC in the south, to last at least until Friday June 17.
However, although DANAs are extremely unpredictable, Aemet spokesperson Ruben del Campo believes it is likely that this weather front could sweep into Spain from Saturday June 18, first cooling the western part of the country while temperatures continue to climb in the east.
If this transpires, the mercury will plummet in much of Spain on Sunday June 19, “except in the Mediterranean area and the Balearic Islands,” ending the heatwave which is the earliest to occur since records began in the early 1980s.
“During the first half of this week there will be extreme and extraordinary temperatures for the month of June, precisely due to a DANA that could end up bringing intense storms and a cooling very soon," Samuel Biener, a Meteored expert said in a statement.
“Only the haze and the medium-high cloud cover could favour certain areas of the southwest not reaching such high values,” he explained, adding that the northern extremities of Spain will escape the heatwave altogether, maintaining mild temperatures and even seeing some rain.
Towards the middle of the week, the DANA will position itself over Madeira, pushing daytime temperatures up even further to a blistering 44ºC in areas such as Badajoz, Cordoba and Seville, while at night, most of the south won’t drop below 23ºC.
Considerable relief is expected by the end of the week, however, particularly in northern and central Spain and the west.
"For the weekend, a temperature drop of up to 10 °C (or even more) could be seen in many areas of Spain," meteorologists predict.
