ARCHIVED - The biggest and smallest spenders visiting the Costa del Sol
A recent study reveals the most spendthrift and stingy tourists to the Andalucía holiday hotspot
A study published on Monday April 4 by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) has revealed that tourists from the United Arab Emirates, the Philippines and China flash the most cash when visiting the Costa del Sol, spending up to three times as much as other foreign holidaymakers.
In the Costa del Sol, the average expenditure per visitor from the UAE was a staggering 904 euros in 2021, compared to just 269 euros spent by Italians. Filipinos come in a close second, each person spending 779 euros in the area, but visitors from China are far from tight-fisted, and the average tourist parts with 706 euros during their stay.
When it comes to daily expenditure, visitors from the UAE of course top the list, with an average spend of 143 euros, followed by Filipinos (123 euros) and Chinese (111 euros). The research points out that tourists arriving from farther afield tend to make the most of their trip, booking excursions and taking in the sights, which all cost money. Since the majority of holidaymakers to Andalucía live a lot closer to home, they holiday here more frequently, and so spend less each time.
This study has concluded that most of the foreign spending in Andalucía actually comes from the United Kingdom, 20.7% of the total. The British barely spend 70 euros a day but, there being so many, the total figure is the largest. They are followed by the French with 10%, the Germans with 7.7% and the Dutch with 7.4%. Looking at the total distribution of spending in the Costa del Sol, the United Arab Emirates barely represents 0.7% and the Philippines just 0.04%.
They may be few, but when they arrive they sure know how to empty their pockets.
The Italians are by far the most careful with their money, averaging out at just 43 euros per person per day, the same as Polish visitors.
Argentines and Koreans are also below 50 euros per day, while the Finns, French, Indians and Japanese all hover between 50 and 60 euros.
