ARCHIVED - The burning of the Falla in Puerto de Mazarron
The fiestas of San José end in Puerto de Mazarrón with the traditional burning of a papier mâché statue
The annual “Fallas” fiestas are now over for another year not only in Valencia, where the event attracts hundreds of thousands of revellers, but also in Mazarrón, where the traditional papier mâché figure was ceremonially burnt on Saturday evening after the Town Hall recovered the old custom.
The design of the brightly coloured temporary sculpture was a tribute to local fishermen and featured a working lighthouse, and attending the burning ceremony were Mayor Gaspar Miras and Councillors Miguel Ángel Peña, Plácida Gómez and Raquel Raja, as well as Carnival and San José fiestas queens.
This is the second holding of the “Quema” alongside the Playa del Rihuete since it was reinstated in the annual calendar by the current council of Mazarrón, and it proved very popular among onlookers.
