The last stone falls on the Lagomar La Manga Hotel
Demolition work began on the La Manga del Mar Menor ghost building last November
It has taken nearly four months to demolish the unfinished Lagomar building in La Manga, the Mar Menor’s most famous ghost building, but after all this time the very last brick has been removed. The demolition process, which ended on Friday February 23, was carried out gradually over 120 days, rather than all at once, due to safety concerns. The council had stated that the building could not be torn down in one go because of technical issues.
Instead, the demolition team employed a careful approach using a giant crane to remove the rubble bit by bit. This became a familiar sight for local residents, who are now left with a vast empty plot of land. The council's plan was to begin demolition from the outside and work their way in, starting with the south tower, followed by the north and west wings, which were the most visible.
Over 85,000 cubic metres of debris were generated during the process, which will be sorted and reused to fill the entire footprint of the building. This will result in a 20,000-square-metre esplanade, ready for future hotel development.
“It was a very good afternoon,” celebrated the mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, on the final day of demolition, adding that this Easter visitors to the region will enjoy a very different urban landscape.
“This area is going to flourish in the way we all want, creating opportunities and making it an emblematic place,” he concluded.
The bill for tearing down the 1970s unfinished hotel, which is close to 800,000 euros, will be passed on to its owners, commercial company Intramanga Turística. If they fail to pay up, the land will most likely be put up for auction.
