England’s new international travel system lifts amber list and PCR restrictions for travelling to Spain from October 4
The traffic light system is coming to an end on October 4, announced UK Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps. The removal of the green and amber lists that restrict international travel to countries affected by coronavirus mean British citizens who are fully vaccinated will be able to travel freely between Spain and England.
The current UK travel rules which will stay in place until October 4 regulate whether people travelling to the UK need to self-isolate and do a PCR test depending on whether the country concerned is on the green, amber or red list. Spain has been on the amber list since July, which means that Brits don’t have to quarantine when they travel from Spain to the UK, but they do have to do Covid tests before flying and on day two after their return.
As of October 4, England will remove the need to do a PCR for people who are doubled jabbed. By the end of October, they will also allow rapid tests to be valid for the day-two coronavirus check and not just PCR tests, making it cheaper to travel abroad as PCR tests can currently cost upwards of 100 pounds.
The new rules are currently only scheduled for England, as Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland make their own rules for Covid travel restrictions, but generally follow the lead of Westminster.
Travelling to Spain will be cheaper as a result, and holidaymakers can hope to benefit from special deals during the October half term as travel agents and airlines look to capitalise on the overhauled travel restrictions and boost income.
Tourists from the UK make up the bulk of foreign travellers to Spain, with over 800,000 Brits arriving at Spanish airports in August 2021 alone according to the latest statistics from Spanish travel companies. While foreign tourism in Spain is up from last year, it is still half of what it was in 2019, and the hope is that the incoming relaxation to Covid travel restrictions will contribute to increased tourism in future.
