The Lorca Tourist Office is moving

ARCHIVED ARTICLE -

The new space will house the tourist information office while the new permanent premises of the Guevara Palace is completed, where it will move at the beginning of next year

In the Plaza de España there will be a Tourist Information Point that will be open for special events and on holidays

The Lorca Tourist Office is moving
The Municipal Tourism Office in Lorca is moving on Monday October 30 to its new temporary location, in the alley of the old San Patricio Collegiate Church. It will leave the ground floor where it has been located in recent years, in a location on the Plaza de España on the corner of Calle Santiago.

“At no time will the visitor service be interrupted, since the transfer will take place when the facilities close this Sunday. And on Monday, first thing in the morning, it will be open on the ground floor of the Calle San Patricio,” said the Councilor for Tourism, Santiago Parra Soriano.

This location, he explained, will be temporary, “since the Municipal Tourism Office will be located on the ground floor of the Palacio Guevara, where historically tourists and visitors who came to the city were served.”

The councillor explained that the restoration work on the Palace is going at a good pace: “They are quite advanced, but there are still some details, so we did not want to rush their transfer until everything was finished. Our intention is to coincide the recovery of the Municipal Tourism Office in the so-called ‘Casa de las Columnas’ when the inauguration of the Guevara Palace takes place.”

These new facilities, in the Guevara, are being specially designed not only to provide the attention required by tourists who come to the city, but also to provide service to those who visit the palace itself, which is being converted into a museum.

“The new space will also have a specific souvenir shop about the ‘House of the Columns’,” Councillor Parra added.

Relocating the Tourist Office to the Guevara Palace is a strategic choice given its prime location: “It is located in the main tourist artery of the city in terms of facilities. On that street is the Visitor Centre, the old convent of La Merced, the Municipal Archaeological Museum, the Paso Blanco Embroidery Museum, the Guevara Palace itself, the Literary Artistic Casino, the Palacio de los Condes de San Julián, the Teatro Guerra and the Museo Azul de la Semana Santa.”

But the Plaza de España will continue to have a Tourist Information Point which will open during special celebrations, such as the Semana Santa Easter Holy Week, as well as other local fiestas and holidays.

Lorca Tourist Office

The rich and extensive history of Lorca has left a legacy of archaeological sites, and historic buildings, around which the modern city has built its tourism industry. Among these are Lorca Castle, the Jewish quarter of the castle and synagogue, Plaza de España, Colegiata de San Patricio, Museo de Arqueologico Municipal, Iglesia de San Francisco, Casa Huerto Ruano, Palacio de Guevara, Iglesia de San Mateo, Pósito de los Panaderos, Convento Virgen de las Huertas, Antiguo Convento de la Merced, Iglesia del Carmen and the Teatro Guerra.

Lorca Tourist OfficeUnfortunately Lorca has also been prone to natural disaster, suffering a Gota Fría on September 28th 2012, as well as two earthquakes measuring 5.3 and 5.5 on the Richter scale on 11th May 2011, claiming 9 lives. Since this earthquake the city has been rebuilding, winning recognition for its Lorca, Open for Restoration initiative, which used the restoration of the city as a tourist attraction whilst it rebuilt its historical buildings, some of which are currently still not open.

The tourist office relocated for 14 years to Calle San Patricio, near the church, but has now returned to its former premises alongside the Palacio de Guevara in the Plaza Concha Sandoval, or Plaza de la Bordadora (click for map).

Lorca also has an area of coastline incorporating the Parque Regional de Cabo Cope - Puntas de Calnegre, in the Sierra de Almenara, which includes the beaches of Puntas de Calnegre, Baño de las Mujeres, San Pedro, El Siscal, Cala Honda, Cuartel del Ciscar, Junquera, Cala de la Gruta, Cala Leña, Los Hierros, Cala Blanca and Playa Larga, although many are accessible only along difficult tracks or by boat!

However, in spite of its many attractions, the name of Lorca is synonymous with Easter, (Semana Santa) its biblical parades of International Tourist Interest status and famous throughout Spain. The week includes a series of processions in which the Whites (Paso Blanco) and Blues (Paso Azúl) try to outdo each other with the magnificence of their embroideries and the skill and daring of their horsemen.

Lorca also has a Parador hotel, located within the historic castle.

Opening hours for Lorca tourist office:

Every day of the year apart from 1st and 6th January and 25th December, 10.00 to 14.00 and 16.30 to 18.30 (except Sunday afternoons).

These opening times are often extended and other information points created during the Semana Santa celebrations.
