The only Spanish city on Lonely Planet's 2026 travel hotlist
A city famous for its carnival spirit, seaside charm and centuries of earns a spot among the world’s best travel destinations
There are countless beautiful places in Spain, but just one has earned a spot on Lonely Planet’s coveted Best in Travel 2026 list. With its carnival chaos, shimmering sea views, and a history stretching back over 3,000 years, this city has always been quietly extraordinary - and now the world knows it too. Welcome to Cádiz.Named as the only Spanish destination among the 25 worldwide picks, Cádiz impressed the travel experts with its “magnificent” restaurants, “archaeological remains,” and lively flamenco culture. It joins an eclectic list that takes in everywhere from Phuket in Thailand and Mexico City to Finland, the Reunion Island, and North Island in New Zealand.
This latest edition of Lonely Planet’s iconic guide marks its 16th year of spotlighting the best places and experiences to visit. Next year’s line-up celebrates everything from world-class food and outdoor adventure to local culture and Cádiz more than holds its own among the global greats.
Set on a slender peninsula washed by both Atlantic and Mediterranean waters, Cádiz is said to be Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited city, founded as Gadir by the Phoenicians around 1100 BC. Its timeworn streets tell that story: narrow lanes twist between weathered sea walls, cheerful tapas bars, and whitewashed buildings that have seen empires rise and fall.Lonely Planet praises Cádiz for its soul: a city of music, laughter, and open-hearted locals known as gaditanos. Every February, the city bursts into colour for one of Spain’s most famous Carnivals, while the rest of the year it hums with flamenco, festivals, and the chatter of terrace tables laden with fried fish and local sherry.
Beyond the city, the province of Cádiz offers even more to fall in love with: brilliant golden beaches, charming vineyards and the famous pueblos blancos, the “white towns” of Andalucía. Perched high on clifftops or nestled into hillsides, these ancient Moorish settlements are all red rooftops, white-walled alleys, and breathtaking views over olive-dotted countryside.
As Lonely Planet notes, the magic of Cádiz is in the mix - ancient roots, modern energy, and a relaxed seaside charm that’s unmistakably Andalusian. In a world filled with dazzling destinations, this coastal gem still feels gloriously authentic.
So, for 2026, Cádiz isn’t just one of the world’s best, it’s flying the flag for Spain.
