The quickest ways to get a DGT environmental label for your vehicle in Spain
Cities across Spain have begun implementing restrictions in their new Low Emission Zones
Before the end of 2023, every city in Spain with a population of more than 50,000 people will have to establish low emission zones – certain streets and city centre thoroughfares that will be off-limits to the most polluting cars. In addition, older vehicles that produce fewer emissions may be limited to certain times of the day.
Although the deadline for introducing the restricted zones was the start of the year, for the vast majority of municipalities this is still a work in progress and the system will be rolled out throughout 2023.
However, many areas have already implemented the measure and in order to access low emission zones cars should carry the DGT’s environmental labels in their windshield.
Remember, driving through a low emission zone if your car is prohibited will result in a 200 euro fine.
Here’s how to find out which label your vehicle needs:
- DGT website: The traffic authorities have a dedicated section on their website for low emission zone requirements which can be accessed here. Simply enter your vehicle registration number and the DGT will tell you which badge you need.
- Phone app: If you have the ‘miDGT’ app installed on your phone, you can check under the ‘My Vehicles’ section.
- Telephone/In-person: Alternatively, you can check which label your vehicle needs by calling ‘060’ or by booking an appointment at your local Traffic Office.
Where to get an environmental label
- Post Offices: Environmental stickers can be purchased at any post office for just 5 euros. The owner of the car will need to bring along valid ID as well as the vehicle’s logbook (permiso de circulación). They can also be bought through the Correos Market website, but additional shipping costs may apply.
- Network of workshops of the Spanish Confederation of workshops (CETRAA) and other networks of authorized workshops: The DGT reached an agreement so that the issuance of environmental labels can also be carried out in trusted workshops. Just like the post office, you’ll need ID and the logbook.
- Institute of Automotive Studies (IDEAUTO): Badges for individual vehicles can be purchased through the IDEAUTO website or, for a fleet of cars, via the Ganvam website.
