The good news is that temperatures are still forecast to rise to over 30ºC this weekend in the Region of Murcia and there’s not much chance of rainy weather, but we will see a return of the ‘calima’, the Saharan dust cloud hanging in the air and making everything hazy.
Calima, the Spanish word for the weather system that brings detritus from the Sahara Desert over on the wind to Spain, has the side-effects of making air quality worse, pushing temperatures up even further and, when combined with rain, leaving muddy brownish deposits on anything it touches.
Thursday April 4 brings some cloudy skies with “mist on the coast” and “temperatures slightly rising,” according to Aemet, but the calima makes its entrance starting on Friday 5.
Temperatures continue to rise up into the high-20s and there will be “light variable winds, tending to moderate north-easterly winds at the end of the day in the Campo de Cartagena”. These winds will bring the dust across the skies, making everything slightly hazy and misty for the weekend, especially on Saturday 6.
Calima aside, there should be enough sunshine to make it quite a pleasant weekend, but remember that people with respiratory problems are advised in these conditions to wear an FFP2 facemask when going outside and undertaking any strenuous physical activity outdoors is not recommended.
Going into next week, there is a chance of some rain on Monday in the northwest of Murcia, around Bullas and Caravaca and possibly even Lorca, which could bring some muddy deposits as a result of the lingering dust cloud, while temperatures are forecast to ease off a bit from Tuesday.
