The new trend of renting out private pools in Spain that could net you 10K this summer
Homeowners in Spain are making thousands each year thanks to the burgeoning private pool rental movement
If you’re after a side hustle to earn a few extra quid during the expensive summer months, you might not need to look any further than your front garden. If you have a pool, that is, since countless enterprising homeowners have realised they can make a small fortune by renting out their terraces when the temperatures begin to climb.
While the Spanish coasts and touristy areas are dotted with beach-side villas and luxury townhouses and apartments, many families still live in flats with no access to a pool. And even in complexes with communal facilities, the coronavirus years saw an emerging trend of people shunning busy shared facilities in favour of smaller, more private options.
So, since 2020, the business of individuals renting their own pools and terraces by the day or by the hour has become a profitable one. Specialist company Cocopool has estimated that the average home owner could pocket around 4,000 euros in the summer months by renting out their pool, and some clients have even reported netting as much as 10,000 euros.
"The rental of spaces has become the business of the summer. In fact, the private pool rental market is now an option that is growing more and more throughout Spain and is a trend that is attracting more and more attention from both owners and swimmers," explains Gerard Xalabarde, CEO of Cocopool, which today has around 250 pools on its books for rent.
But there is a drawback, since most people who hire a pool for a day are planning some sort of party or celebration, and they usually require the use of the entire garden.
How does it work?
If you’re interested in renting your pool out, you’ll first need to register with one of the specialised companies which have sprung up all over Spain. The rental cost is decided by you and should be determined by the kind of facilities you have to offer, but a good guide price is around 30 euros per person per day.
Your property is then advertised online – it’s kind of like a Booking.com for pools – and you list the availability of your garden.
There are undoubtedly pros and cons, but the reality is that renting out private pools presents a lucrative opportunity for homeowners looking to capitalise on the rising demand for private swimming facilities.
