ARCHIVED - These are the Spanish cities with the cheapest public transport after new government discounts
City bus fares will be discounted by a minimum of 30% throughout Spain until the end of the year
In an attempt to ease the burden of rising fuel and cost of living prices, the Spanish government is offering completely free travel to regular users on all commuter and medium-distance trains from September 1 until December 31.
There are certain stipulations though: passengers have to buy their tickets in advance and pay a deposit of up to 20 euros, depending on the service. This will be refunded provided that a total of 16 trips are made before the end of December this year.
Curious to see where passengers were getting the most bang for their buck with the new discounts, the Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) has carried out a study on 50 regional capitals, in addition to the north African autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. They compared the cost of making 50 regular trips on urban buses compared to the price with the new scheme, and some of the results were surprising.
The cheapest public transport by far can be found in Albacete in Castilla-La Mancha, at just 7.50 euros, followed by neighbouring Ciudad Real (10 euros) and Logroño in La Rioja (13.23 euros).
Next on the list is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (14 euros), ahead of Cuenca, Guadalajara and Vitoria, all at 15 euros.
On the other end of the scale, passengers pay the most for city transport in the Galician province of Vigo, followed by the cities of Huesca and Oviedo. Granada and Alicante aren’t far behind, but the real wild card in the group is the Spanish capital.
Before the government discount was introduced, Madrid was, perhaps unsurprisingly, the most expensive city in Spain for public transport. By applying a reduction of 50%, it has managed to drop rankings significantly to seventh place.
