These are the traffic violations that will cost drivers in Spain 20,000 euros
Serious driving infractions in Spain are considered a criminal offence, and carry a heavy price
The cost of fines for traffic violations in Spain can vary widely and the accompanying laws can change greatly overtime, meaning that motorists can easily be caught unaware and be forced to pay hefty sanctions if they are not familiar with the up-to-date rules and regulations.
Most drivers are familiar with speeding laws and the rules requiring seatbelts and prohibiting mobile phone use behind the wheel but what may come as a shock to many is that there are a couple of infractions for which the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) can issue a whopping 20,000-euro fine as they are considered criminal offences.
Infractions that can lead to this extortionate sanction:
- The first violation is related to the condition of the road and road infrastructure: damaging the asphalt or any part of the thoroughfare due to the size or weight of the vehicle is going to have expensive consequences, and is punishable by fines of between 3,000 and 20,000 euros depending on the amount of damage caused.
- The second infraction, which carries equally costly fines, is causing damage or modifications to traffic signs. Altering the information by preventing others from interpreting the information, or hiding or defacing road signage is considered especially serious as it threatens the safety of other road users.
An even larger fine
Believe it or not, 20,000 euros is not the highest penalty handed out by the DGT. Drivers found to be using radar inhibiting devices in their cars will be slapped with a 6,000 euro fine and lose six points from their licence. In addition, mechanics and garages found to be installing this kind of equipment in vehicles in Spain could find themselves up to 30,000 euros out of pocket.
