Third summer heatwave arrives: Spain weather forecast Aug 7-10
Temperatures will reach 45ºC in large parts of Spain over the next few days
After a couple of days of relief from the heat at the end of last week, the temperatures ramped right back up again on Saturday and Sunday and this trend looks set to continue, with the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) promising that the third true heatwave of the summer is upon us.
The heat will gradually increase across Spain between Monday and Wednesday and large parts of the country will easily exceed 40ºC over the course of several days, and the next few nights are likely to be stifling.
Half of the autonomous communities in Spain will be on alert for extreme temperatures on Monday August 7 although the day will be marked by lots of cloudy intervals, particularly in Catalonia and Valencia, where there is also the chance of some weak showers.
Following a sweltering Sunday, the mercury will actually dip on Monday in southern Andalucia and the entire Mediterranean area but rise in the rest of the country. In saying this, it’s highly likely that 40-42ºC will still be reached in many parts of the southwest.
There will be strong intervals of wind in the southern half of the Mediterranean coast.
Orange weather warning for extreme heat: Andalucia (also strong winds and stormy seas), Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura.
Yellow weather warning for extreme heat: Balearic Islands, Castilla y Leon, Galicia, Madrid.
The weather warnings remain in place on Tuesday August 8 on a day that will bring very little change overall. There’s a slight chance of light showers or dry storms in eastern and inland Spain, mostly clear in the rest of the country.
Daytime temperatures will rise across the board, more pronounced in north and eastern Spain. A southeasterly breeze will again feel stronger along the Mediterranean coast and the Levante.
Orange weather warning for extreme heat: Andalucia (also stormy seas), Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid.
An approaching DANA in northwest Spain will bring plenty of cloud cover to much of the country on Wednesday August 9 with the exception of the Mediterranean coast, which will remain clear and bright. However, in the south, the skies will grow more overcast later in the day and there’s a chance of dry storms and occasional showers.
Maximum temperatures are on the rise in a large part of the country and on the islands while nighttime temperatures will also increase considerably.
Orange weather warning for extreme heat: Andalucia, Aragon, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Madrid, Navarra, Basque Country, La Rioja.
Yellow weather warning for extreme heat: Catalonia, Galicia, Region of Murcia, Valencian Community.
The DANA that briefly hit the north will begin to move away on Thursday August 10, resulting in generally stable weather everywhere. Cloud cover will develop in the east and inland areas towards the afternoon, bringing the possibility of more dry storms and weak rain.
Calimas are expected in the Canary Islands and the southern part of Spain, although these Saharan dust clouds will lose strength throughout the day.
The nighttime temperatures will take a welcome breather in western Spain on Thursday but will continue to increase in the rest of the country and the Canary Islands. And while the mercury will continue to climb during the day on the islands and on the Mediterranean coast, it will dip elsewhere. Nevertheless, 35ºC will likely be exceeded in the extreme south and southeast.
There are no heat warnings in place for Thursday.
