ARCHIVED - Thousands attend illegal university party in Madrid
Police in Madrid were still trying to clear the area of revellers at 7am the following morning
More than 25,000 people congregated on Friday night, September 17 on the grounds of the Complutense University of Madrid to throw a huge illegal street party, contrary to all Covid safety regulations. Police sources have indicated that it is very fortunate that serious incidents were avoided considering the university itself gave authorities no advance warning about the size of the gathering.
When the Municipal Police arrived on the scene just before midnight, they were faced with thousands of young revellers drinking and partying on the campus, and given that they were unprepared with the relevant manpower, focused instead on avoiding any altercations, particularly on the nearby streets and Metro. Given the lack of officers, “dissolving some 25,000 people is an almost impossible task,” according to a police spokesperson.
While the police presence did eventually result in the crowd dispersing, the situation wasn’t fully resolved until around 7am, due to the large volume of people and the lack of transportation at that time of night. Thankfully, the party was broken up without any serious incidents. The Municipal Police has reinforced its weekend team with 200 extra agents to clamp down on these illegal gatherings and even uses drones to monitor the situation from the sky.
Elsewhere, some 8,000 youngsters attended a separate illegal party on the campus of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) over the weekend, an event organised on social media which quickly descended into violence. While the Mossos d’Esquadra (Barcelona’s police force) is investigating the incident, a spokesperson has reiterated the difficult position of officers having to deal with thousands of revellers, often alcohol-fuelled, in a safe and effective manner.
