ARCHIVED - Three out of four cars will be banned from Spanish roads next year
From 2023, cities in Spain with more than 50,000 residents will have to set up low-emission zones
As part of the Climate Change Law, Spain has committed to cracking down on vehicles that cause the most emissions and from next year, the most polluting cars will have their routes limited in towns and cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants. Some 75,000 vehicles circulating on Spanish roads have combustion engines and they will all be affected by this measure.
The restrictions will begin with the oldest and polluting models that don’t qualify for a DGT environmental label, followed by diesel and petrol cars with a C and B rating. Naturally, drivers of hybrid and electric cars will enjoy more freedom.

When the Climate Change Law comes into force in 2023, low emission zones will have to be established in almost 150 Spanish municipalities, greatly restricting three out of four vehicles currently on the roads.
Depending on the circumstances, certain towns with 20,000 or more residents will also be subject to the restrictions; overall, around 25 million people reside in these municipalities, representing 53% of all Spanish drivers.
Cities like Madrid and Barcelona have already introduced low emission zones, which ban the more polluting vehicles at certain times of the day. In these areas, electric and hybrid vehicles can move freely, but currently in Spain, these cars only account for 3.9% and 18.4% of all traffic, respectively.
