Toddler tourist drowns in Spanish swimming pool
The family was staying in a Barcelona holiday rental when tragedy struck
A two-year-old girl drowned on Tuesday July 25 in a private pool in l’Ametlla de Mar, close to Barcelona. According to local reports, the police were called to a holiday home in the Les Tres Cales urbanisation at around 7.30pm.
It’s believed the child was holidaying in Spain with her parents and siblings and that the family is of German and Russian origin.
Somehow the child’s parents managed to take their eyes of her for a split second and she fell into the pool. Her sister alerted the family that the toddler was drowning.
An ambulance from the Emergency Medical Services (SEM) sped to the scene and spent some time trying to resuscitate the little girl, but sadly she was pronounced dead by the medics.
According to the experts, a young child can drown in just 30 seconds if she doesn’t know how to swim.
Since the beginning of the year, 30 people have drowned on beaches and swimming pools in Catalonia, 19 during the months of June and July alone. The vast majority (15) have died since June 15 while bathing on a beach.
