ARCHIVED - Toledo man rescued from well after attempting to save his dog
An American Staffordshire Terrier and his owner fell into a concealed pit in Olías del Rey
A 28-year-old man was fortunate to escape with his life last week when he had to be rescued by the fire brigade and the Guardia Civil from the bottom of a 4-metre well, after falling in while trying to rescue his dog.
The incident occurred in the countryside close to Olías del Rey in the province of Toledo (Castilla-La Mancha), where the young man and his partner were out walking their American Staffordshire Terrier and the dog fell into a borehole which was concealed by undergrowth. The owner followed his pet down and was unable to climb back out again, and his partner hurriedly called the 112 emergency services line to ask for help.
When Guardia officers arrived at the scene they found the young man holding on to a water pipe with one arm while carrying the large dog in the other, and the provincial fire brigade of Toledo were called in to mount a complex rescue operation. In the end one of the officers was lowered into the well and both dog and owner were hauled out by the rest of the rescue team: both escaped with minor injuries, although the owner was taken to the Hospital Virgen de la Salud in Toledo with symptoms of hypothermia and dizziness.
