ARCHIVED - Torremolinos man kidnapped in unlucky case of mistaken identity
The man was abducted from a Málaga street in broad daylight

A pedestrian in the municipality of Torremolinos, Málaga, was forced into a car by two other men only to be kicked out of the vehicle moments later when his kidnappers realised they had taken the wrong man.
A middle aged, North African man was walking along the pavement when a car pulled up alongside him and two men got out. The aggressors then viciously kicked him and forced him into the vehicle before driving off. The incident took place at around noon on Tuesday January 24 and there were several other people on the street at the time who alerted the emergency services.
The police search barely had time to begin, however, as the kidnappers soon realised that they had abducted the wrong man. The victim was then thrown out of the car, with no severe injuries, at a nearby petrol station, located on the motorway towards Fuengirola.
The case has now been handed over to the Unit against Drugs and Organized Crime (Udyco) on the Costa del Sol. Members of this unit are now attempting to identify the kidnappers, which should not take too long thanks to witnesses who were able to provide the car’s licence plate and a description of the criminals.
Although this incident might seem more like a film scene than real life, these kinds of violent crimes are on the increase in the Andalusian province of Málaga. During the third trimester of 2021, the number of kidnappings increased by 75% (from four to seven) when compared to 2020’s figures while the number of murders doubled (from six to 13).
