Tourist in critical condition after being injured by falling debris in Spain
Gusts of up to 150 km/hour ripped through Valencia over the weekend
A 57-year-old Italian tourist is fighting for his life after being struck by falling debris in the city centre of Valencia. The incident occurred on Calle Cirilo Amorós shortly after 10am on Sunday March 3, when strong winds swept through the region, causing chaos and destruction.
Emergency services rushed to the scene after receiving notifications of the accident. The man, who was on vacation in the city, suffered a severe head injury and was treated on site before being transferred to the Hospital de La Fe in Valencia. His current condition is listed as critical.
The Valencian Community was placed on orange alert throughout the day on Sunday due to the intense winds, which reached speeds of up to 150kmh in certain areas. Firefighters from the Community worked tirelessly to secure cornices and signs that posed a risk of falling in various parts of the city.
An investigation into the accident is currently underway, with officials working to determine the exact cause of the debris fall and whether any other factors contributed to the incident.
The winds are still high in Alicante and the rest of the Valencian Community this week but the gusts have thankfully lost most of their intensity and there are currently no weather warnings in place for the coming days.
However, other parts of Spain, particularly northern provinces, remain on high alert for dangerously choppy seas caused by the wind, and a couple of regions have even been issued warnings for possible avalanches.
