ARCHIVED - Tourist spending by the Irish, Belgians and French in Spain exceeds pre-pandemic levels
Visitors from the UK accounted for 21.1% of holidaymakers in Spain during 2022
Spain has held the position as the second most popular tourist destination in the world since 2017 and although visitor numbers drastically dropped off here and elsewhere during the coronavirus pandemic, 2022 spelled a dramatic rebound.
Holidaymakers from across the globe flocked back to Spain last year and visitors from 7 countries exceeded pre-health crisis spending: Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, France, Switzerland and Norway. In addition, tourists from the UK, Italy, Germany, Finland, Denmark and the US spent around 90% as much as they did back in 2019.
Bringing up the rear are China, Japan and South Korea, whose citizens only spent between 13-53% compared to before the pandemic.
This is according to Turespaña, which reported that Spain welcomed 129.5% more tourists in 2022 than the previous year, and that these vacationers spent 149.4% more throughout that 12-month period.
Specifically, Spain received a total of 71.5 million international tourists last year, who spent an average of 162 euros each per day. With the lifting of travel restrictions, the United Kingdom has once again positioned itself as the leading tourist source market (21.1%), followed by France and Germany.
The vast majority of foreigners who visited Spain last year unsurprisingly came on holiday (87%), most stayed in hotels (69%) and the top destinations were the Balearic Islands (20%), Catalonia (19%) and the Canary Islands (17%).
34% of holidaymakers came to Spain as part of a couple, 24% visited with their family while 17% travelled solo. It was close competition between those choosing city breaks and people visiting the beach (61% versus 61%), while 53% of holidaymakers did some shopping while in Spain.
Finally, despite the recent chaos in Spanish airports, 83% of foreign visitors flew to Spain and just 16% travelled here by car.
