ARCHIVED - Tourist target: Marbella thief caught stealing high-end watch from holidaymaker
Several brave witnesses halted the robber in his tracks until the Marbella Police arrived to rescue him
The speedy get-away of a thief in Marbella (Malaga) was thwarted on Monday October 24 after several quick-thinking passers-by blocked the path of a tourist pickpocket.
The young man allegedly snatched a valuable watch off the wrist of a tourist walking along San Pedro Alcántara at around 1pm. A witness called the Andalucia emergency services after seeing first hand how the robber had violently snatched the watch from a woman’s arm.
According to official sources, the tourist wasn’t injured but officers of the National Police were deployed to Avenida de Barcelona after the thief fled. Several witnesses to the event have reported that the snatcher threw the high-end time piece into a nearby garden “after being cornered”.
The thief was arrested and the watch has been recovered, although the police investigation is still open; several accounts of similar robberies have been reported, and it’s believed that this incident could be part of a wider operation.
In August alone, the National Police arrested three men and three women in Marbella as allegedly responsible for the theft of three high-end watches.
Although the suspects haven’t been linked in any other way, all of the robberies occurred in the Puerto Banús area and the victims were also tourists who were spending a few days in Marbella.
