Tourists in Spain warned about little-known drinking law that affects EVERYONE and carries a massive fine
The Department of Foreign Affairs has issued travel advice for Irish holidaymakers in Spain
Summer in Spain is popular with Irish tourists, eager to top up their tans under the Spanish sun. But many places have been cracking down on alcohol consumption since the Balearic Islands, including Mallorca and Ibiza, announced a series of restrictions in order to cut down on anti-social behaviour.
Now, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in Ireland has issued a warning for holidaymakers about a certain “forbidden” behaviour that could cost them up to 3,000 euros in fines.
According to the DFA: “Consumption of alcohol in public places, except licensed bars and restaurants, is forbidden in Madrid, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.
“Failure to respect these laws may result in a fine.”
In addition, the DFA has warned Irish tourists to be careful when enjoying a drink in Spanish bars, as the measures tend to be a lot larger than on the Emerald Isle.
“Alcoholic spirits are usually sold in significantly larger measures in bars and restaurants in Spain than in Ireland,” the department reminded.
Holidaymakers taking a trip to certain holiday hotspots like Ibiza, Magaluf and Mallorca will have to contend with other limitations, however, as the Balearic Islands government is cutting down on the amount of free booze on offer in many all-inclusive resorts.
The law, which states “alcoholic drinks will be limited to six per day,” also bans the advertising of party boats, a limit on the hours supermarkets can sell alcohol and a ban on two-for-one happy hour offers.
Hefty fines will be doled out to anyone flouting the rules as the regional government steps up measures to reduce “tourism excesses.”
