Tourists in Spain warned of highway pirate scam
Scammers have been known to orchestrate crashes with unwitting rental car drivers in Spain
Spain is undoubtedly one of the most popular destinations for Irish and UK holidaymakers, with thousands of people are making plans for their next Spanish getaway.
And while crime on the Costas isn’t necessarily higher than in other parts of Europe, an influx of tourists provides the ideal opportunity for fraudsters, and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has warned travellers of the latest ‘highway pirates’ scam, in which con artists convince rental car drivers there is something wrong with their vehicle in order to get them to pull over, before robbing them.
A spokesperson from the DFA explained: “Be aware of 'highway pirates' who target foreign-registered and hire cars. We’re aware of such activity in the vicinity of airports, in particular.
“Some will try to make you stop, claiming there is something wrong with your car or that you have damaged theirs. In some cases, they will even deliberately orchestrate a collision in order to get you to stop and exit your car, before stealing personal belongings from you.
“If you decide to stop to check the condition of your/their vehicle, try to stop in an area with lights and people, such as a service station, and be extremely wary of anyone offering help.”
Driving on the other side of the road, dealing with unfamiliar traffic laws and handling a new vehicle can all make for a stressful situation, and the DFA has urged motorists travelling to Spain to be extra cautious.
“The rules of the road in Spain are broadly similar to those in Ireland, and roads are modern and well maintained. Traffic is faster-paced than in Ireland and driving customs are different. You should exercise particular caution while driving at night.”
