ARCHIVED - Tourists in Spanish holiday destination banned from wearing football shirts and swimming costumes
Eleven Mallorca restaurants have implemented dress codes with the aim of cutting down on “drunken tourism”
Holidaymakers heading for Mallorca this summer might need to rethink their packing as several restaurant owners in Palma have clubbed together and implemented a new, strict dress code, which bans football jerseys and bathing suits.
One Playa de Palma business owner said that venues are already getting tired of the so-called “drunken tourism” before the high season has even really begun and the new measures are aimed at establishing more respectability in the town.
The banned clothing includes:
- Tank tops without straps
- Swimming trunks
- Swimsuits
- Any accessories purchased from street vendors, such as gold chains or glow-in-the-dark hats
- Football strips
So far, 11 restaurants have imposed the ban and have placed QR codes at their entrance so customers can check the dress code, but other hospitality establishments are expected to follow soon.
CEO of Palma Beach, Juanmi Ferrer said: “The situation on public roads is worse now than in 2017, 2018 and 2019. We already consider the season lost in terms of incivility control.”
And calling for more police, he added: “We need support from the authorities because neither the businesses nor the residents can stop it.”
According to Mr Ferrer, the objective of the dress code is not to “prohibit” but rather to “re-educate” holidaymakers through “friendly ways of communicating.”
Manager of Palm Beach, Pedro Marín, explained that the streets of Palma are already swamped with unruly tourists that the local police are unable to control, who spend their money “generally on alcohol and cans of beer that they consume drinking on the street.”
“They arrive at the hotels in the morning and can’t even walk, they are completely drunk and even their companions leave them alone, lying on the sidewalk.”
