Traffic diversions and disruptions on the A-7 road in Murcia between now and May
Major work on the new train line is underway in the area over the next two months, meaning road closures and alternative routes

Traffic diversions and temporary closures will come into force on the A-7 autovía in Totana from this Thursday March 5 as work progresses on the high-speed rail line between Murcia and Almería.
According to Adif Alta Velocidad, the reorganisation of traffic will remain in place until May 20, 2026 while a new viaduct is built as part of the Murcia-Lorca-Almería high-speed rail line, which runs through the town of Totana.
The works will affect vehicles travelling along this section of the A-7 at different times and in different ways, with both full closures and partial diversions planned over the coming weeks.
Alternative routes and bypass system
To enable construction to move forward safely while maintaining the flow of traffic, a series of alternative routes has been agreed with the Demarcation of Roads of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.
Two types of traffic alteration will be implemented.
- In the event of a total closure of the motorway, vehicles will be diverted from the A-7 via junctions 609 and 618, using the N-340a and RM-502 roads as alternative routes.
- For partial closures, a temporary bypass system will be installed. This will divert traffic from one carriageway to the other via the central reservation crossings located between kilometre points 614/714 and 615/220. During these periods, traffic will run in both directions on a single carriageway.
Dates and times of closures
The schedule of traffic changes is as follows:
- From 10pm on March 5 until 6am on March 6 there will be a total closure of the A-7.
- From 6am on March 9 until 1pm on March 23 the Almería-bound carriageway will be closed, with two-way traffic operating on the Murcia-bound carriageway via the bypass.
- From 6am on March 23 until 1pm on April 9 the Murcia-bound carriageway will be closed, with two-way traffic operating on the Almería-bound carriageway via the bypass.
- From 6am on April 13 until 1pm on April 29 the Almería-bound carriageway will again be closed, with traffic diverted to the Murcia-bound side in both directions.
- Finally, from 6am on May 4 until 1pm on May 20 the Murcia-bound carriageway will be closed, with two-way traffic running on the Almería-bound carriageway.
Drivers are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys, particularly during the periods of full closure and when traffic is reduced to a single carriageway.
The traffic measures are required to facilitate construction of a 954-metre-long viaduct that will carry the new high-speed rail line over the A-7. The structure will consist of two sections formed by prefabricated concrete beams and a central metallic section spanning the motorway.
Between March 5 and May 20, major operations will be carried out, including the lifting of the central span beam using two large mobile cranes and the welding work required to join the structure.
Adif Alta Velocidad states that work continues to advance on the Murcia-Almería high-speed line, described as a strategic crux of the Mediterranean Corridor and the first direct rail connection between the two provincial capitals. The overall investment in the line amounts to €3.6 billion.
