Train strikes scheduled across Spain in November and December
Railway workers are protesting the transfer of the management of Catalonia’s commuter trains to the government
Renfe and Adif workers have called a five-day strike in protest against the transfer of management of Rodalies – Catalonia’s commuter train services – to the local government.
The 24-hour stoppages have been scheduled for November 24 and 30 as well as December 1, 4 and 5, which is right in the run up to the long weekend, and will effect all of Spain.
The controversial management change has come about as a result of an agreement made between the acting socialist government and Catalonia’s Republican Left (ERC). Pedro Sánchez needs the support of the separatists if he’s to secure a second term as Spanish president, and the political parties are also finalising a contentious amnesty law which will offer a pardon to all those involved in the unlawful 2017 independence referendum, as well as members of the Democratic Tsunami platform and the Committees for the Defence of the Republic.
Unions representing the railway workers have already conveyed to the Ministry of Transport their concerns about the transfer of power from Rodalies and have asked the powers that be to guarantee that the rights of Renfe staff be upheld.
The decision to push ahead with the strike action was reached on Tuesday November 7 after meetings of the General Business Committees of Adif and Renfe Operadora.
“We celebrate that all the union organisations support the proposal in both railway companies and we hope,” UGT said in a statement “that on this occasion all the unions comply with and defend the agreements that both committees have unanimously reached today of the aforementioned companies.”
This isn’t the first time the state railway workers have gone on strike. Back in 2021, employees downed tools for eight days in a demand for more staff, also because there were rumours that the Catalan government and the State were negotiating a transfer of management.
