ARCHIVED - Two doses of Pfizer not enough to combat Omicron variant
A third booster dose or specific vaccine will be needed for extra protection
The fear of many coronavirus experts that the new Omicron variant may evade the current vaccinations appears to have been realised, as a recent study conducted by Pfizer on twelve blood tests in South Africa showed that a double dose of the jab is not completely effective against this strain.
The research also concluded that people who have recovered from Covid and subsequently been vaccinated have far better immunity against Omicron.
While the study concluded that the vaccine’s antibody protection is actually 41 times lower for the variant than for the original coronavirus, the researchers are actually pleased with the results, with lead scientist Alex Sigal admitting that he expected the data to be much worse.
All indicators point toward a booster dose of Pfizer providing far greater protection against Omicron, although the experts stress that the current vaccines “still protect against serious illness and death”.
The pharmaceutical company insists that these results highlight the need for a specific vaccine to combat the Omicron variant, something which could realistically be ready as early as March.
