ARCHIVED - Two out of every ten people living in Lanzarote are foreigners
The Spanish island is most popular with Britons, who make up 6% of all non-national residents
The Canary Islands have always been popular with foreigners, with its year-round sun attracting thousands of tourists from all over the world. But Lanzarote is also a top destination for second home owners and expats and today, two out of every ten residents are non-nationals.
According to the latest census published by the Lanzarote Data Centre, 23% of the population on the island was born outside of Spain, with 35,571 foreigners registered on the ‘padrón’ out of the 156,112 total residents.
Unsurprisingly, British nationals make up the bulk at 6%, followed by people from Colombia, Italy, Morocco and Germany. China comes in fifth place, and bringing up the rear are Romania, Cuba, Venezuela, France, India, Portugal, the Dominican Republic, Argentina, Ecuador, Senegal and the Netherlands.
Europe is by far the continent with the biggest representation in Lanzarote these days, with seven different nationalities accounting for 44% of the resident foreign population. Next up is actually the continent of America, which comprises 19.4% of the total. Way down the list are Africa (11.9%) and Asia (6%).
It’s not just the archipelagos that are in high demand though as last year, 13.8% of all property purchased in Spain was bought by foreigners, the highest figure ever recorded. And while the Balearic and Canary Islands came out on top, they were closely followed by the Valencian Community and the Region of Murcia.
