ARCHIVED - UK Most Wanted criminal arrested in Spain
An off-duty police officer spotted the fugitive in Malaga following the launch of the UK’s ‘12 Most Wanted’ campaign
Just 24 hours after being named on the UK’s ‘Most Wanted’ list, suspected drug smuggler Joshua Hendry, 30, was arrested by the National Police in Marbella, Malaga on Thursday January 20. The fugitive was spotted by an off-duty officer who recognised him from the campaign launched the day before while he was walking through the town of San Pedro de Alcántara.
Formerly of Walton, Liverpool, Mr Hendry stands accused of trafficking heroin and cocaine from Liverpool to Grimsby; his mother and brother have also been convicted of the same crime.
The National Crime Agency (NCA) released a statement on Wednesday asking members of the public to keep an eye out for the 12 notorious criminals, all of whom are believed to be in hiding in Spain. Most of the fugitives are wanted for crimes relating to large-scale drug trafficking, although some are also being hunted for murder or the supply of firearms and ammunition.
Given the rapid success of the Most Wanted campaign, the NCA is hopeful that the remaining criminals on the list will be located before too long.
“Those men will know now that we’re after them,” Tom Dowdall from the agency said.
“They can live their lives anxiously looking over their shoulders and wondering if today’s the day they get caught, or they can do the right thing and hand themselves in.”
The Director General of Operations of the NCA, Steve Rodhouse, explained that the Costa del Sol is the hideout of choice for many British criminals because, among other reasons, there is a large concentration of Brits who reside or spend the summer there.
Anyone with information about any of these fugitives can contact Crimestoppers by calling the toll-free number 900 926 111.
