ARCHIVED - UK negotiating further driving licence extension for Spanish residents
Under the current regulations, UK licences are only valid in Spain for residents until February 28
The British Ambassador in Madrid, Hugh Elliott, confirmed last week that he is in ongoing negotiations with Spain to allow UK nationals to switch their driving licence to a Spanish one without having to take a practical test.
Mr Elliott revealed the news via the official Brits in Spain Facebook page on February 17, saying:
“As you’d expect, I can’t go into the details of the negotiations, but I can say they are ongoing. We have asked Spain for an extension to the grace period for the recognition of your UK licences for a sufficient period of time to allow us to work through the negotiation and reach the definitive agreement that we all want.”

As it stands, British nationals who are resident in Spain have until February 28 to exchange their UK licence; if another extension is not granted, anyone with a British licence will not be permitted to drive in Spain. If an agreement is met before this month’s deadline, it will be the fourth time the grace period has been extended.
The rules only apply to UK nationals living in Spain; visitors and tourists can continue to use their UK licence for the duration of their trip and do not require an International Driving Permit.
