UK students can attend Spanish university thanks to post-Brexit deal
A new agreement between Spain and the UK means it will be easier for those educated under the British educational system, including in Spain, to attend a Spanish university
The Spanish and British Governments have signed an agreement to make it easier for university-level students in Britain to access educational facilities at Spanish universities.
The agreement was signed yesterday by Spain’s Minister of Education and Vocational Training, Pilar Alegría, and the Ambassador of the United Kingdom in Madrid, Hugh Elliott.
This special deal will allow students studying in the British higher education system to attend a Spanish university under exactly the same conditions as students from European Union member states, that is, similar to pre-Brexit.
“This agreement enables students with UK qualifications (including A-levels and equivalents) to access universities in Spain without the need for the Spanish general university entrance exam. Additional entry requirements will only be necessary for certain competitive courses, as was the case prior to the UK’s withdrawal from the EU,” said the UK Embassy in Spain in a statement.
The aim is to limit the impact of Brexit on university access for students from the UK who wish to study abroad, as well as British schools that follow a British curriculum within Spain. It is estimated that more than 70,000 students in Spain study under the British educational system at more than 80 different schools.
Hugh Elliott said, “Today I had the honour of signing the agreement on the recognition of school qualifications with Pilar Alegria which will facilitate the access to university for our respective students. I look forward to finalising the signature next week with Joan Subirats [Spain’s Minister for Universities].”
