UK tourist drowns in front of her family in Lanzarote
The British woman sadly died at the popular Las Cucharas beach on the Spanish island
A 45-year-old British tourist drowned at Las Cucharas beach in Lanzarote, one of Spain's popular tourist islands, on Thursday July 25. The incident took place just before 2.30pm local time, with sources confirming that the woman was British and accompanied by her family at the time.
Lifeguards immediately jumped into action, pulling the woman from the sea and attempting to revive her. Despite their efforts, emergency medical responders who took over were unable to save her, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Guardia Civil is awaiting post-mortem results to confirm the cause of death but has stated that there are no indications of any criminal activity surrounding the incident.
A spokesperson for a regional emergency response coordination centre said: “We received several calls just before 2.30pm yesterday, indicating a person with drowning symptoms had been pulled from the water and saying lifeguards were performing basic resuscitation manoeuvres.
“The appropriate emergency response was immediately activated. Emergency medical responders initiated advance resuscitation after arrival but could not save the woman who was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have been informed.”
This sad event follows another recent drowning incident in Spain, where Bryn Thomas, a 52-year-old man from Southampton, sadly lost his life last month at La Roquette beach on the Orihuela Costa.
Thomas had raced into the sea to help two children aged 6 and 7 who were in difficulty but unfortunately could not be saved. An inquest into his death was opened earlier this month in Winchester.
