ARCHIVED - UK travellers will have to pay to enter Spain next year
Adult Brits will need a visa to travel to Spain and the rest of Europe from 2023
A new visa system being introduced across Europe next year means that travellers from the UK and other third countries will soon have to pay to come to Spain for a holiday or short business trip.
The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), or SEIAV as it is known in Spanish, was actually supposed to be introduced this year, but has been delayed due to the rollout of the new European Union Entry and Exit System (EES) system, which will also come into effect in the next few months.
Brits between 18 and 70 years travelling to any European country by plane, boat or car and staying for less than 90 days in a 180 day period will have to apply for the ETIAS visa online at least 96 hours before departure.
The new rule will not impact those who have a visa for their destination country or people who have permanent residency in an EU country (TIE holders in Spain). The ETIAS costs just 7 euros and will remain valid for three years, unless the traveller renews their passport, in which case they will have to apply for a new one.
When applying online for the ETIAS, travellers will have to enter data such as their passport number, education and work history, criminal convictions and recent travel information, and airline staff will check them before passengers are left on the flight.
Once the European Union Entry and Exit System (EES) system is rolled out, passengers will no longer have their passports stamped; instead, biometric scanners will swipe their documentation, which will be able to instantly tell if a traveller has overstayed.
The European Commission has confirmed that “the Entry/Exit System will not apply to non-EU citizens holding a residence document or a residence permit. Their personal data will not be registered in the Entry/Exit System.”
“It is enough if holders of such documents present them to the border guards to prove their status.”
