ARCHIVED - UK holidaymakers arrested for using counterfeit cash in Lanzarote
The suspects allegedly brought the fake bank notes from the UK to Spain
Two English tourists are facing up to twelve years in prison for circulating counterfeit cash in the village of Yaiza in the south of Lanzarote.
The 27-year-old woman and 30-year-old man allegedly brought 51 ten-euro notes from the UK and used them in a local hotel. On top of the jail sentence, the suspects could be ordered to pay a fine of ten times the face value of the counterfeit money seized, which amounted to 510 euros.

The investigation began when a hotel in Playa Blanca reported that the holidaymakers had paid with four fake notes; a judge then authorised a search of their room, where the remaining bills were discovered on May 26.
Both suspects were arrested and have been made available to the Arrecife Guard Court of Instruction.
Following this incident, the Guardia Civil has recommended that hotels and other establishments encourage customers to use cards over cash whenever possible and always use counterfeit bill detectors.
The news comes on the same day as another British tourist on the way to Lanzarote was arrested for trying to open the plane door mid-flight while drunk or on drugs.
