ARCHIVED - Ukrainian letter bombs traced to city in Spain
Several explosive packages have been mailed to high-profile figures in Spain
The police in Spain have traced the origin of the letter bombs, sent to several high-profile locations including the Ukrainian Embassy, to Valladolid, a city in the province of Castilla y León. Unfortunately though, the authorities are no closer to tracking down the culprit as all of the explosives were mailed from public postboxes in areas without CCTV.
The letter bombs, which thankfully only caused one minor injury, were all sent within days of each other to the Spanish President and the Minister of Defence, as well as the Ukrainian and US embassies in Madrid, an air force base and an arms company in Zaragoza that supplies weapons to Kyiv.
Although the National Court is investigating the incidents as acts of terrorism the authorities are confident that the responsible individual does not pose a threat to national security.
In another grisly turn of events that appears to be unrelated, the Ukrainian embassies in Spain, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Croatia, Italy and Austria have all received packages containing animal eyes and a putrid liquid designed to look and smell like blood. Similar gruesome parcels were also sent to the consulates in Naples, Krakow and Brno in the Czech Republic.
The Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, believes that Russia has a hand in the latest "planned campaign of intimidation."
"We have reason to believe that there is a well-planned campaign of terror and intimidation against Ukrainian embassies and consulates. Unable to stop Ukraine on the diplomatic front, they try to intimidate us," Kuleba said in a press release over the weekend.
