ARCHIVED - Upper class people are more likely to support Catalan independence
New research has found that pro-independence sentiment is greater the higher the socioeconomic level in the Spanish region of Catalonia
A study based on data from the Generalitat in Catalonia has found that pro-independence attitudes are greater the higher the level of income. The study concludes that the rift in Catalonia over the independence issue has divided society into two halves which, in turn, are defined by ethno-linguistic and socioeconomic boundaries.
It is logical that among social groups who speak Catalan more and have deep family origins rooted in the Catalonia region, pro-independence feelings are more prominent, but the study is perhaps surprising in linking socioeconomic status to political support for regional independence. It turns out that the higher the socioeconomic level, the more support there is for Catalan independence from Spain.
The region’s politicians launched a failed attempt at unilateral separation from Spain just over 4 years ago, on October 27 2017, which was labelled a coup by the Spanish central government and led to the arrest of then President of the region, Carles Puigdemont.
Those who support independence for the region and those against it are thought to be around 50/50.
