ARCHIVED - Vaccination campaign stung by uptick in Covid cases: Murcia update September 27
Both the 7- and 14-day incidence figures have jumped up in the Region this week

The joint flu jab and coronavirus booster campaign got underway in the Region of Murcia on Monday September 26, the same day that the regional health authorities released their Covid update, which shows a worrying upswing in the incidence rate in older populations.
Visiting the Virgen del Valle nursing home in the Murcian district of El Palmar yesterday, where both residents and staff are being vaccinated, the Minister of Health Juan José Pedreño assured that the Region is in a stable situation as infection rates remain low. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that the incidence rate at 7 days is climbing, “so we will be attentive to possible changes.”
Coronavirus infections
The Region of Murcia has registered a total of 436 cases of coronavirus since the last update on September 21, which is a considerable increase on the 187 infections reported at that time.
This brings the overall number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 456,041.
Of the total cases, 84,497 have been diagnosed in people over the age of 60.
Cumulative incidence rate
The latest data provided by the regional health authorities on Monday show that the 7-day cumulative incidence rate has taken another considerable upswing, increasing from 93.89 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to 96.02. This up and down trend has dominated in the Region for the past few reports, with this weekly figure routinely losing and gaining a couple of points.
Unfortunately, the more important average incidence over a two-week period has also increased from 176.19 cases to 184.42.
The Spanish national average has registered a similar jump this week, increasing 6 points to 136.26 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
Following its usual see-saw trend, hospitalisations have increased again this week, moving from 92 patients admitted up to 105 in the last few days. Of these, 45 have been hospitalised directly as a result of Covid.
The number of chronically ill patients being treated in intensive care has remained stable at six, and 4 of these are in the ICU for Covid (one less than in the last update).
Four more Covid-related fatalities have been registered, bringing the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis to 2,443.
Covid testing
The Region of Murcia has carried out 3,158,191 PCR and antigen coronavirus detection tests.
Vaccination data
There has been no recent update from the regional health authorities on vaccination figures, but the latest available data show that 91.84% of the entire population of the Murcia Region has had a least one dose. In addition, 84.87% of people are now double jabbed.
