Valencia man jailed for killing his partner's pet rabbit and cooking it in front of her
The abuse in the Valencian town of Montserrat went on for years before the court handed down its sentence

A man in the Valencian town of Montserrat has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison after confessing that he killed his partner's pet rabbit, cooked it and tried to force her to eat it.
According to sources, he slit the white rabbit's throat in front of the woman and then rubbed its blood on her face.
The incident was one of several episodes of abuse she suffered from October 2021, when she'd been living with him for a month. On one occasion he beat her with a stick because he disagreed with the clothes she wanted to wear, and on another he tied her up and threatened to slit her throat and throw her into the fireplace.
The court also handed him 240 days of community service. He was convicted of four counts of assault related to gender-based violence, along with battery, repeated threats, habitual abuse, animal abuse and a crime against moral integrity. He had initially faced 12 years in prison, but the sentence was reduced because he suffers from paranoid schizophrenia.
