Vera floods as calls for breakwaters cannot go unheard any longer
A storm has caused significant damage and the Local Council is calling on the Government to take action now
Following destruction caused by a strong maritime storm this weekend, the Town Council of Vera has requested for the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge to build breakwaters on the coast of the Almería town.
The storm has caused flooding in many streets in the Vera area, and has even submerged homes and trapped vehicles, leaving a significant amount of damage to the town.
The flooding began on Saturday January 18 in the Natsun area of Vera Playa, leaving houses waterlogged and damage to the streets in the area. It is believed that erosion and the lack of effective measures taken by the government are leaving the coast unprotected to storms such as this one, making it unsafe for the people of Vera.
The mayor of Vera, Alfonso García, has pointed out that the damage is a consequence of a pattern which continues to play out in Vera. The mayor has stated, "We suffer this situation every time there is a small storm", which causes "all the beach services and all the street furniture to disappear".
The mayor continued by saying that he feels "angry, indignant, frustrated and deeply worried after a new maritime storm that has once again flooded the Natsun area in Vera Playa".
"I will not rest until the long-awaited breakwaters, which will definitively resolve this situation, become a reality."
The Local Council has pointed out that "historically", the Natsun area of Vera Playa has the most erosion problems. However, there is a project to regenerate the coast with two breakwaters already in place, and this has led to the beach having an optimal sandy area and perfect conditions.
Still, the local government points out that the beach that extends from the jetty located next to the nudist hotel, which is in front of the Natsun housing estate, is the one that suffers flooding problems every time the waves reach a certain level.
This is the reason that the local council is crying out for the implementation of the breakwaters, as the coast in that area cannot sustain flooding any longer.
In recent weeks, 400,000 euros have been invested in replacing 50,000 cubic metres of sand in the area. This new sand, however, was washed away by the waves within a short period of time during the storm.
