ARCHIVED - Volcanic activity and gas emissions plummet in La Palma
Experts claim there is no discernible sign of activity on Wednesday December 15
The Aridane Valley on the Canary Island of La Palma dawned on Wednesday December 15 without a single sign of volcanic activity, one of its quietest days since the eruption of Cumbre Vieja in Cabeza de Vaca 88 days ago which forced thousands from their home and devastated farms, businesses and the local infrastructure.
Volcanologist Rubén López, one of the members of the National Geographic Institute which has been closely monitoring the situation has confirmed that there has not been a single observable sign of the eruption yet today and the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (Involcán) has echoed this finding, announcing that the emission level of sulfur dioxide (SO2) has also plummeted in the last 24 hours.
The amount of sulfur being emitted into the atmosphere has decreased to less than five tonnes per day, an “extremely low” quantity according to the experts, after weeks of being above several thousand tonnes and at the high or very high level.
