ARCHIVED - Warm winter brings early almond blossoms in Orihuela
Higher than usual temperatures and recent rains have led to an early flowering of almond trees in the Vega Baja municipality, Alicante province

The slopes of the Sierra de Orihuela in the district of Raiguero De Bonanza are currently awash with colour following a warmer than usual winter and recent rains which have caused the array of almond trees to reveal their beautiful pale pink petals early.

Almond trees normally bloom between the end of January and the middle of February, but climate change and associated higher temperatures is being attributed to the early bloom. However, the advance in flowering does pose a risk to the trees, which could freeze if temperatures suddenly drop due to a cold snap.
