Warning olive lovers: Massive recall of pickled products across Spain
Widespread recall of olives, pickles and sweet peppers in several parts of Spain
Anyone fond of pickled treats, especially from the popular CORBÍ brand, should be aware that certain products have been urgently recalled due to containing unfit ingredients for human consumption. The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN), under the Ministry of Health, has withdrawn several items from market, including jars of mixed olives, sweet peppers and pickles.
These common grocery products originate from Jaén and have been sold to supermarkets and shops in major autonomous communities such as Catalonia, the Valencian Community, Cantabria, Madrid, Andalucia, the Balearic Islands, the Region of Murcia, Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha.
However, the health authorities are worried that the pickled jars may have travelled even further afield.
While details are scant, what we know is that laboratory tests detected questionable components, raising concerns about their safety for human consumption. Regrettably, neither AESAN nor the producer has clarified the precise substances or associated health risks.
Consumers are strongly encouraged to inspect their pantries for possibly contaminated goods and refrain from consuming them. To assist in identifying the affected products, here are key features to look out for:
