ARCHIVED - WATCH: Donald Trump openly supports far-right in Spain
In a video message, the former US president urged Spain to “protect its border”
Former US president Donald Trump created quite the stir among political leaders in Spain when he openly voiced his support for controversial far-right party Vox at an annual political rally in Madrid last week.
In the 40-second video message recorded aboard a plane, which was shown on a big screen at the VIVA 22 event, Trump thanked the right-wing party’s leader Santiago Abascal for the “great job” he’s doing in protecting Spain’s interests on an international scale.
“We have to make sure that we protect our borders and do lots of very good conservative things,” Trump said. “Spain is a great country and we want to keep it a great country. So congratulations to Vox for so many great messages you get out to the people of Spain and the people of the world.”
Founded in 2013, Vox is a national-conservative party which quickly rose to become the third-largest political entity in the country. It has had a disappointing showing at the polls in recent months, but supporters hope that the appointment of Giorgia Meloni’s neo-fascist Brothers of Italy Party will turn the tide in the elections next year.
In Spain, Vox often grabs the headlines for some of its more radical views, which include a strong stance against immigration, advocacy of a tougher law and order regime with little regard for gender equality and zero tolerance for Catalan or any other separatist movements. The party is also staunchly religious and promotes the traditional values of the Catholic church, including anti-LGBTQI+ opinions.
Several other European leaders sent similar messages to Trump before Vox leader Abascal took to the stage to praise the former president:
“My thanks to President Donald Trump, a visionary in the fight for sovereign nations, a visionary in the fight for secure borders, who has had to suffer [attacks] from the most powerful establishment in the world and the largest media attack that any world leader has had to face in recent memory.”
