ARCHIVED - WATCH: hair-raising footage as Germany-bound plane makes U-turn back to Lanzarote following engine failure
The aircraft returned to base just 20 minutes after taking off from Spain
A Boeing 757-300 passenger plane destined for Hamburg in Germany was forced to make a dramatic U-turn and head back for base after its crew reported engine failure shortly after take-off.
The Condor company aircraft departed from the César Manrique–Lanzarote airport at 5.20pm on Tuesday July 19 but after just minutes in the air, the crew realised there was a problem with one of the engines and requested that the plane be allowed to return to base.

Air traffic controllers reported on their Twitter account that priority was immediately given to the plane covering the DE1439 flight and all other aircraft scheduled to land were put on standby so that the Boeing could land quickly and safely.
The aircraft touched down in Lanzarote again at 5.40pm, just 20 minutes after taking off, without incident.
