ARCHIVED - WATCH: Storm Efrain sweeps away cars and roads as torrential rain batters Spain
Hundreds have been evacuated from their homes across Spain as the deluge continues

Incredible scenes are emerging all across the country as Storm Efraín brings record rainfall, with torrential downpours completely flooding homes and roads, sweeping away cars and leaving countless people stranded. The deluge continues on Wednesday December 14 with Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia in for the most extreme weather.
The eye of the storm has to be Extremadura, where more than 200 people have been evacuated from their homes in the province of Badajoz alone. Several shelters have been erected where displaced residents can spend the night but that’s only if they can get there, since the torrent has made many roads impassible, even creating an enormous sink hole between Cáceres and Badajoz.
Distressing images show families being rowed to safety in dinghies, while another man was rescued from the roof of his car in the municipality of Valdebótoa after a river burst its banks and engulfed his vehicle.

Worryingly, the water levels in the Guadiana River continue to rise as the rain refuses to let up, with fears mounting that a major flood could cause untold damage and danger. The 6-metre rise has already covered the steps in the bank and for locals, who spent the night bailing out submerged homes and streets, it’s now a waiting game.
Elsewhere, Madrid has activated its Flood Action Plan and all the parks have been closed, In the past few hours, firefighters have been called out to 171 rescue situations and more than 156 other incidents of flooding have been reported.
The storm continues to batter Castilla-La Mancha and Castilla y León and in Andalucia, the Huelva-Zafra railway line has just been reopened after the downpour resulted in a terrifying landslide near Jabugo and Valdelamusa.
